HERE IS A BIT OF KNOWLEDGE

The Department of Corrections is not about corrections. The Department of Corrections is about punishment. You might already know this.

What you might not know is that staff members are also treated like prisoners to a great degree by the corrections administration. Staff members are not trusted. If a staff member defies the warden or breaks one of the Department of Correction’s insane rules whereby staff members are supposed to be treating prisoners like dangerous animals, then the staff member is severely punished.

Corrections administrators are so crazy that in some states, they lose 50% of their staff every 3 years! To cope with this, some Department of Corrections have come up with mandatory overtime. If a prison guard or correctional officer does not want to work a mandatory overtime shift he/she is suspended for two weeks without pay! For the few who can afford this, it is a welcome vacation. For the others who have to work, it is a severe punishment, which only deepens further the staffing problem they already have.

Is the system insane?

Well, maybe. But I think the system is merely misnamed. I propose that the Department of Corrections in the United States of America be properly named for what it actually is:

THE DEPARTMENT OF PUNISHMENT
~~ or ~~
THE INSTITUTION OF PUNISHMENT

staffed with Punishment Officers and Punishment Administrators

If you agree, please send this to all of your legislators
and lets get the name changed to reflect what the institution is really all about.
Let’s get rid of “politically correct” terms and begin using terms that match what things actually are.
